Winter Snowsports Festival 2018

Sunday, January 7th to Thursday, January 11th, 2018

This program is an annual event sponsored by Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports and Mt. Washington Resort on Vancouver Island. It is traditionally held in the second week of January.

This program is offered to people with learning challenges who would like to expand their horizons and learn an exhilarating sport which can become a lifelong family activity.

Anyone over the age of six years and who has some ability to learn is welcome. We offer novice lessons in downhill, snowboard or cross country skiing as well as a ski improvement segment if you have some experience.

We are able to accept a maximum of 25 students; however " first time" applicants will be given priority in selection of participants.

Applications must be received by December 8th, 2017.

Veterans' Ski Week - Sunday, January 28th to Friday, February 2rd, 2018

This annual event hosted by Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsport (VISAS) and Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island is sponsored by the Canadian Armed Forces Soldier On program that seeks athletic opportunities for ill or injured service men and women.

The Ski Week provides the opportunity for ill or injured members of the Canadian Armed Forces from across the country to return to a sport they may once have enjoyed or to introduce them to a winter sport which may become a lifelong family actively.

VISAS is a volunteer group of 90 Alpine, Nordic and Snowboard instructors, many of whom are retired military members and all of them are dedicated to “bringing the mountain” to people with disabilities. We are a non-profit organization focused on providing nationally certified instructors to assist physically or mentally challenged individuals. We offer instruction in downhill, snowboard and cross country and provide all adaptive equipment.

VISAS has worked with veterans for 14 years. Last year, 22 Canadian and 10 Australian active military members or veterans were part of this challenging and exciting week on the snow.

This ski week has been made possible with the support of:

  • Soldier On Program,
  • the Comox, Courtenay, and Lantzville branches of the Royal Canadian Legion
  • local community business and private donations
  • and Mount Washington Alpine Resort

We are looking forward to seeing you on the snow!

Herb Bradley Challenge - Sunday, March 4th, 2018

Our major fundraising event of the year is the Herb Bradley Challenge, named in honour of our founder.  This is a fun filled day on the mountain featuring a race for our students and a poker run/ski for anyone who wishes to participate.  The first leg will be a unique dual barrel slalom in which our students will be partnered with sponsor teams.  Sponsors will then continue on through four more legs with each participant drawing cards from dealers at designated locations.  Our students may continue on with their team, practice their skills on the slalom course, or just have fun playing in the snow.  The awards ceremony will be at 3:00 PM where there will be door-prize draws, some special awards, and the best poker hand of the day will be revealed.

Sponsoring teams donate $100 per participant. As a registered charitable organization we will issue appropriate tax receipts.  Your donation will also pay for your lift passes for the day for those who do not have season passes and lunch will be provided free.

We would like to invite you to come join us March 4th, 2018 at Mt. Washington and help us put smiles on the faces of our students as they push their boundaries.    If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute to this exciting program we will welcome whatever donation you are able to make.  We also welcome donations of items for door prizes at the event.  If your team has a theme, costumes always add to the carnival atmosphere.  Bring along your mascot if you have one, as long as it is house broken.
